Up Close

  • 542 S Broadway Los Angeles, CA, 90031 United States (map)

On Saturday, January 30th Andy crowdsourced the creation of a huge, complex portrait of artist Chuck Close from 17,100 recycled LEGO pieces in collaboration with Art Share LA. He invited the 50,000 attendees of Night on Broadway to participate and complete the work of art over five hours outside the Spring Arcade building.

The interactive mosaic build was recorded and the time lapse video of the entire creation process (above) was created.

About Chuck Close
Chuck Close is a renowned painter known for using intricate patterns to convey human portraits by working from a gridded photograph. He builds his images by applying one careful stroke after another to create a larger than life image. His early techniques inspired the development of the ink jet printer. On January 30th we'll take a page out of his book and create a meticulous, detailed work by breaking his portrait into small, fun to assemble sections.

We emulated the grid process Chuck Close uses with LEGO bricks.
